Is asphalt the right roof for your Calgary home?
For most pitched homes in Calgary, asphalt shingles are the right roof: they give the best balance of up-front cost, curb appeal and easy repair. You see them on 1970s bungalows and brand-new two-storeys alike.
Asphalt is not the longest-lasting or most hail-resistant material. What it offers is value. A well-installed shingle roof typically lasts about 15 to 20 years in Calgary, costs less than metal, and when hail or a chinook gust damages a few shingles, they can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the roof.
Asphalt tends to fit if:
- Your roof is pitched, not flat or nearly flat.
- Your roof has valleys or dormers that would be costly in metal.
- You may sell within the next 10 to 15 years.
- You want simple repairs and easy-to-match materials.

How an asphalt shingle roof works
An asphalt shingle roof works as a layered system in which each component does a job the shingles cannot do alone. Most leaks we trace come from a missing or poorly installed layer underneath, not from the shingles themselves.
- Roof deck. Plywood or OSB sheathing that must be flat, dry and solid.
- Ice-and-water shield. A self-adhering membrane at the eaves, in valleys and around penetrations that seals around nails and stops meltwater backing up behind ice.
- Synthetic underlayment. A water-resistant second line of defence over the rest of the deck.
- Drip edge. Metal flashing that directs water off the roof edge.
- Starter strip. Sealant-backed shingles at the eaves and rakes that glue the first course down against wind.
- Shingles. Overlapping courses, each nailed through its nailing zone and sealed to the course below.
- Flashing. Step, valley, chimney and pipe flashing where water concentrates.
- Hip and ridge caps. Thicker cap shingles over the peaks.
- Ventilation. Intake vents at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge keep the attic cool and dry.

Types of asphalt shingles
The main types of asphalt shingles are 3-tab, architectural (laminated) and designer (luxury), with impact-rated versions as an upgrade.
3-tab shingles
A 3-tab shingle is a single flat layer with cutouts forming three tabs. It is the lightest, flattest-looking option, and for full replacements in Calgary it has largely given way to heavier architectural shingles that cope better with wind.
Architectural or laminated shingles
Architectural shingles bond two or more layers into a thicker shingle with a dimensional, shadowed look. They are the everyday choice for Calgary homes: the added mass helps them sit flat in wind, and the random pattern hides minor unevenness in older decks.
Designer or luxury shingles
Designer shingles are the heaviest asphalt products, shaped to imitate slate or wood shakes. They suit steep, highly visible roofs and higher-end homes.
Impact-rated shingles

Asphalt shingles work best on pitched residential roofs, which describes the large majority of Calgary houses.
- Bungalows and split-levels from the 1960s to 1980s, many now on their second or third roof.
- Two-storey homes in newer suburbs, with multiple hips and valleys.
- Townhomes and duplexes, where matching shingles keep a consistent look.
- Detached garages that should match the house.

Our asphalt shingle installation follows the same sequence on every roof:
- Protect the property. Tarps over landscaping and siding.
- Tear-off to the deck. Old shingles, underlayment and worn flashing come off.
- Deck repairs. Soft or rotten sheathing is replaced and loose boards re-nailed.
- Ice-and-water shield and drip edge. Membrane along the eaves and in every valley, drip edge at the roof edge.
- Synthetic underlayment over the remaining deck with proper overlaps.
- Starter strips at the eaves and rakes.
- Shingles and flashing. Consistent nailing in the nailing zone, with new step, chimney and pipe flashing.
- Ventilation. Ridge vent cut in and intake at the eaves checked.
- Hip and ridge caps to finish the peaks.
- Cleanup and magnetic nail sweep of the yard and driveway.
A typical replacement needs about 3 to 5 dry days.
Lifespan of an asphalt roof in Calgary
An asphalt shingle roof lasts about 15 to 20 years in Calgary, and reaching the top of that range comes down to three things:
- Ventilation. Balanced intake and ridge exhaust prevent the attic heat that ages shingles and the condensation that rots decks.
- Proper installation. Correct nailing, ice-and-water shield, sealed starters and good flashing prevent early failures.
- Maintenance. Fixing lifted shingles, cracked pipe boots and loose flashing early keeps small problems off the deck.
Age matters for insurance too. A roof under 15 years old may be paid at full replacement minus the deductible, a roof 15 to 25 years old is often depreciated 50 to 80 percent, and a roof over 25 years may get actual cash value or a denied claim.
Maintenance and repairs
Asphalt roofs need light, regular attention, and most repairs are quick when caught early.
From the ground or a window, look for missing, curled or lifted shingles after wind, gaps in flashing around chimneys and vent pipes, and debris in valleys. In the attic, watch for water stains, frost on nails in winter or daylight through the deck. Please stay off the roof yourself, especially in cold or wet weather.
After hail, dented metal vents and dinged siding are clues, but shingle bruising is hard to see from the ground, so have the roof checked before your insurer’s claim window closes.
