What a proper roof installation looks like in Calgary
A proper roof installation in Calgary is a sealed, ventilated system built on a sound deck, with extra waterproofing where ice and water collect, fastened to hold in strong wind and detailed at every edge and penetration. Shingles are only the last layer.
Calgary sits in Canada’s most active hail belt, chinooks swing winter temperatures above freezing in a day, and freeze-thaw cycles work water into any gap. An installation that passes elsewhere can fail here within a few winters. Below is each component, why it matters locally, and how to tell whether it was done right.
The roof as a system
A roof works as a system because each layer backs up the one above it. Shingles shed most water, underlayment catches what gets past, ice-and-water shield seals where water is pushed uphill, flashing redirects water at walls and chimneys, and ventilation controls the heat and moisture attacking everything from below.
Great shingles over a poorly vented attic still curl early, and perfect underlayment cannot stop water funnelling behind a reused step flashing. That is why we judge an installation by its weakest detail.
Component by component
Every component below has a specific Calgary reason for being installed a certain way.
Roof deck and sheathing repairs
The deck is the plywood or OSB every layer is nailed into. After tear-off it should be walked end to end. Soft, delaminated or rotten sheathing is cut out and replaced at matching thickness, and loose boards are re-fastened. Nails cannot hold in a chinook wind if they are driven into mush.
Drip edge
Drip edge is metal flashing along the eaves and rakes that kicks water clear of the deck edge. At the eaves it sits under the ice-and-water shield; at the rakes it goes over the underlayment, so every lap sheds water outward.
Ice-and-water shield at eaves, valleys and penetrations
This self-adhering membrane bonds to the deck and seals around nails. In Calgary it runs along the eaves past the warm wall line, down every valley, and around chimneys, skylights, sidewalls and plumbing vents. When a chinook melts snow and a hard freeze follows, ice dams push water back up under the shingles; this membrane keeps it out of the house.
Synthetic underlayment
Synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the deck as a secondary water barrier. It lies flat, resists tearing in wind and tolerates Calgary’s temperature swings. Laps should run so water flows over them, never into them, fastened as its manufacturer directs.
Starter strips
Starter strips along the eaves and rakes put sealant right at the roof edge, where wind uplift begins. A field shingle flipped upside down puts the sealant in the wrong place.
Field shingles: nailing pattern, placement and exposure
Field shingles must be nailed to the manufacturer’s written instructions, commonly four nails per shingle and typically six for high-wind applications. Nails belong in the marked nailing zone, driven flush, never overdriven or angled. Exposure must stay consistent so each sealant strip lines up with the course above.
Valleys: open versus closed-cut
Valleys carry more water than any other part of the roof. An open valley is lined with metal over ice-and-water shield, with shingles trimmed back. In a closed-cut valley, one slope runs through and the other is cut in a clean line above the centre. Both work when done carefully; neither tolerates nails near the centre line.
Step and counter flashing at walls and chimneys
Where a roof meets a wall, a separate step flashing is woven in with each shingle course so water steps outward. Counter flashing covers the top, tucked behind siding or cut into chimney mortar. One long strip with sealant along the top fails once the sealant ages.
Plumbing-vent boots and roof vents
Vent boot collars crack under Calgary sun and cold, so every new roof gets new boots. Roof vents are flashed so shingles above lap over the upper flange and the lower flange sits on the shingles below.
Hip and ridge caps
Purpose-made cap shingles bend without cracking in the cold. Each cap is nailed so the next covers its fasteners, lapped away from the prevailing west wind.
Ridge venting and balanced intake at the eaves
Ridge venting releases warm, moist attic air along the peak, but only works when matched by intake vents at the eaves. Balance keeps the deck cold in winter, limiting ice dams, and moves moisture out before it frosts on the sheathing.
Installation mistakes that shorten a roof’s life in Calgary
The most damaging installation mistakes are buried under the shingles, so nobody sees them until water shows up inside.

Following manufacturer instructions and local building code
A good installation follows the roofing manufacturer’s written instructions and the building code that applies to your home. Manufacturer instructions set nailing, exposure, underlayment, cold-weather sealing and ventilation requirements for each product; code sets the minimum standard and any permit requirements. On a Calgary roof, the minimum is the floor, not the goal.
Our installation process, day by day
Our installation process follows the same order on every roof, because each step depends on the one before:
- Site setup. Disposal bin placed; landscaping, walkways and siding protected.
- Tear-off. Old roofing removed in sections to the bare deck.
- Deck repairs. Damaged sheathing shown to you, then replaced.
- Dry-in. Drip edge, ice-and-water shield and synthetic underlayment on each section opened.
- Flashing and vents. Step flashing, valley work, vent boots and roof vents.
- Shingles. Starter strips, then field shingles nailed to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ridge and ventilation. Ridge vent balanced with intake, then hip and ridge caps.
- Cleanup and walkthrough. Debris cleared, magnetic nail sweep, and a final walk around with you.
Installing different roof systems
The layers change with the roof system, but dry-in, flashing and ventilation principles stay the same.
Asphalt and Class 4 shingles
Both install with the components above. Class 4 is the top UL 2218 impact rating, but its hail performance still depends on correct nailing and a solid deck.
Metal
Metal uses its own underlayment, trims and fasteners, and panels must be free to expand and contract with Calgary’s temperature swings.
Low-slope membranes
Sections too shallow for shingles need a membrane with sealed seams, careful edges and a clear drainage path.
How to check the quality of an installation
You can check an installation’s quality by asking the right questions up front, looking carefully afterwards, and asking for photos of what gets covered up.
Questions to ask before work starts:
- Will the roof be torn off to the deck, and how is damaged sheathing handled?
- Where will ice-and-water shield go?
- Will all step flashing and vent boots be new?
- How will ventilation be balanced, and what happens in cold weather?
From the ground: straight courses, even exposure, clean valleys, new vent boots, drip edge along the roof edge and a continuous ridge vent.
In the attic: no daylight around penetrations, dry sheathing, clear intake airflow and no winter frost under the deck.

What affects installation cost
Roof installation cost depends on size, pitch, complexity and the system installed:
- Size. One square is 100 sq ft; roof area is usually about 1.3 to 1.5 times floor area.
- Pitch and height. Steeper, taller roofs need more safety setup.
- Detail work. Valleys, dormers, chimneys and skylights add flashing.
- Tear-off and deck repairs. Extra layers and rotten sheathing add labour.
- Material and ventilation. Each system installs differently, and correcting venting adds components.
