Why roof ventilation matters so much in Calgary
Roof ventilation matters in Calgary because our climate attacks the attic from both directions: moisture and heat from the house in winter, and baking sun on the shingles in summer. A balanced vent system keeps the roof deck cold and dry in January and lets heat escape in July.
In winter, every house pushes warm, humid air upward. Cooking, showers and laundry add moisture, and some of that air slips into the attic. When it meets the frozen roof deck and the tips of roofing nails, it freezes into frost. Then a chinook arrives, pushing temperatures above freezing and sometimes past 10°C for days, and all that frost melts at once. Water drips off the nails, soaks the insulation and stains ceilings. It looks like a leak, but the shingles are fine.

Summer brings the opposite problem. An unvented attic under strong prairie sun gets extremely hot, cooking asphalt shingles from underneath. Asphalt roofs in Calgary typically last about 15 to 20 years, and a hot attic pushes a roof toward the short end of that range.
A dry climate does not mean no condensation. Indoor winter air still carries plenty of moisture, and the colder it is outside, the faster it turns to frost.
How attic ventilation works
Attic ventilation works by letting cool outside air in low at the eaves and letting warm, moist air out high at the ridge. That continuous flow carries heat and moisture away before they can cause damage.
The driving force is the stack effect. Warm air rises toward the peak and exits through exhaust vents, drawing fresh air in through intake vents at the eaves. Wind adds to the flow. When both ends are open and matched, air sweeps the whole deck.
Three principles make the system work:
- Balance beats quantity. Adding exhaust vents without enough intake starves the system. The attic then pulls replacement air from wherever it can, often from the house below.
- Intake has to stay open. Under-eave intake vents only help if air can get past the insulation. Blown-in insulation tends to drift into the eaves and plug them.
- Baffles protect the airway. Baffles, also called rafter vents, are channels fastened between rafters at the eaves. They hold insulation back and keep a clear path from the eave intake up into the attic.
Signs of poor ventilation
The most common signs of poor roof ventilation in Calgary are frost in the attic during cold weather and dripping water when it warms up. Other symptoms show up on the roof, the ceilings and even upstairs rooms.
Watch for:
- Frost on the underside of the roof deck and on nail tips during a cold snap
- “Attic rain”: drips onto insulation or ceilings when a chinook or spring thaw melts that frost
- Dark, stained or blackened sheathing, especially on the north side
- A musty or mouldy smell in the attic
- Large ice dams and heavy icicles along the eaves
- Upper floors that stay uncomfortably hot in summer
- Curling, cupping or blistering shingles well before their expected age
- Rusty nails or rust streaks on the attic side of the deck
Two or three of these together usually point to ventilation.
Types of roof exhaust vents
Roof exhaust vents come in several styles, and the right choice depends on your roof shape, attic layout and how much intake the home has. The biggest rule is to use one exhaust type per attic space.
Ridge vents
A ridge vent is a continuous vent that runs along the peak, covered by ridge cap shingles so it blends into the roof line. It exhausts evenly along the full length of the attic, right where the warmest air collects. Paired with intake at the eaves, it is the most effective setup for most gable roofs.
Box vents (static vents)
Box vents are low square vents set near the ridge. They have no moving parts and suit hip roofs or short ridges where a continuous ridge vent will not fit. Several are usually needed, spaced to cover the attic.
Turbine vents
Turbine vents spin in the wind to draw air out. The bearings wear, they can get noisy, and they rely on wind.
Powered attic fans
Powered fans use a motor to pull air out. If intake is short, they depressurize the attic and pull conditioned, moist air up from the house through light fixtures, hatches and ceiling gaps. That can make frost problems worse, not better.
Gable vents
Gable vents sit in the attic end walls. Common on older homes, they move air mainly across the attic ends, not along the deck.
Why mixing exhaust types causes trouble
A ridge vent combined with box vents or a gable vent often pulls air in through the nearer exhaust opening instead of the eaves, leaving most of the deck unventilated. When we change a vent system, we remove or close off competing exhaust.

The mistakes below are common across the roofing industry, and most are fixable.

Ventilation, air sealing and insulation work together
Ventilation removes moisture and heat that reach the attic, but air sealing and insulation decide how much gets there in the first place. The best results come from dealing with all three.
The big leaks are usually pot lights, attic hatches, plumbing and wiring holes, and gaps along wall top plates. Warm air pours through them and feeds attic frost no matter how good the vents are, so we recommend having air sealing addressed alongside the roof work. How we improve roof ventilation
We improve roof ventilation by balancing intake and exhaust so air moves along the entire underside of the deck, then correcting the details that block or bypass it.
Our approach typically involves:
- Assessing intake and exhaust balance from the attic side, including whether eave intake is actually open
- Adding or replacing ridge vent along the peak, or box vents where a ridge vent does not suit the roof
- Removing or closing off competing exhaust vents that short-circuit airflow
- Installing baffles at the eaves where the attic is accessible
- Rerouting bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans through proper roof caps
- Sealing and flashing every new vent opening so it sheds water and snow
Many of these fixes suit an existing roof, but the most complete result comes during a re-roof.
Ventilation and your roof replacement
Every roof replacement in Calgary should include new ridge venting balanced with intake at the eaves. Reusing an old, mismatched vent layout on a new roof carries the same frost and heat problems onto new shingles.
A replacement is the best moment to fix ventilation properly: the ridge can be opened to the right width, old box vents removed and patched, and exhaust fan caps installed cleanly. The same job should add ice-and-water shield along the eaves and in the valleys, which protects the house if ice dams form.
What affects the cost of ventilation work
The cost of roof ventilation work depends on how much needs to change and whether it is done on its own or as part of a re-roof.
The main factors are:
- Scope: adding a few box vents is very different from cutting in a full ridge vent and removing old exhaust
- Roof shape and pitch: hips, short ridges and steep slopes affect vent choice and labour
- Intake condition: blocked eave intake and missing baffles add attic-side work
- Attic access: tight attics and vaulted ceilings limit what can be reached
- Exhaust fans: each fan rerouted needs ducting and a new roof cap
- Timing: combining ventilation with a replacement avoids separate tear-up and repairs
