What Calgary weather does to roofing materials
Calgary is harder on roofs than most Canadian cities because it combines several kinds of stress in one year, and a material that handles one well can fail at another.
- Hail. Calgary sits in Canada’s most active hail belt, with most storms between June and August. Hail bruises and cracks shingles, splits wood and dents metal.- Wind and chinook gusts. Strong westerly winds and gusty chinooks test every edge, ridge and fastener. Shingles that never sealed properly, or were nailed too high, are the first to lift.
- Freeze-thaw. Chinooks can push temperatures above freezing, sometimes past 10°C, in the middle of winter before the cold returns. Water that works into small gaps freezes, expands and widens them, cycle after cycle.
- Snow load and ice dams. Snow sitting on a roof adds weight, and when attic heat melts it, the water refreezes at the cold eaves. That ice can push water back up under the roof covering.
- Strong UV at altitude. At Calgary’s elevation, sunlight is more intense than in most lower cities. UV breaks down asphalt binders, fades colours and weathers wood.
- Dry air. Low humidity dries out organic materials. Wood shakes lose moisture and become brittle, and aging shingles lose flexibility faster.

Class 4 shingles carry the top UL 2218 impact rating, which means they were tested against steel balls up to 2 inches in diameter without cracking. They look and install much like architectural shingles, so they fit any home style and any roofing crew familiar with shingles. The difference is toughness: ordinary hail is more likely to leave surface scuffs than broken mats. They are not hail-proof, and very large stones can still damage them, but for a city with our storm record they change the odds in your favour. That combination of familiar look, strong hail resistance and simple repairs is why we call them the sensible default for most pitched Calgary roofs.
Metal roofing: standing seam and steel shingles
Metal is the strongest long-term performer on the list. Standing seam uses long panels with raised, concealed-fastener seams, which suit simple roof lines and modern homes. Steel shingles are stamped to look like a traditional roof and work better on busier roof shapes. A well-installed metal roof lasts decades and sheds snow readily. It also shrugs off strong UV and dry air. Hail can dent it, which is often cosmetic rather than a leak, but ask your insurer how cosmetic damage is treated. Metal needs fastening that allows for chinook-driven expansion and snow guards where sliding snow could land on people or cars.
Synthetic and composite shakes and slate-look products
Synthetic roofing is made from engineered polymers or composite blends shaped to look like cedar shake or natural slate. The appeal in Calgary is clear: you get a character look without wood that dries out or stone that is heavy and brittle. Many products are designed for impact resistance, but ratings vary by product, so confirm the specific rating rather than assuming. They are also much lighter than natural slate, which spares the roof framing. Quality varies between lines, and repairs need matching pieces. For heritage-style homes or anyone who wants a shake or slate appearance, synthetics are usually a better bet here than the real thing.
Cedar shake
Cedar shake has a beautiful, natural look, but it is the material that struggles most with Calgary weather. Our dry air and intense sun pull moisture from the wood, which leads to cupping, splitting and faster greying. Hail can split shakes that have become brittle, and freeze-thaw works into those cracks. Cedar also needs ongoing upkeep, such as clearing debris and treating the wood, to reach a reasonable life. Once shakes start splitting and curling, repairs tend to become frequent and piecemeal. Fire resistance is another concern with untreated wood. If you are choosing fresh, a synthetic shake usually delivers the look with less risk.
Flat and low-slope membranes: EPDM, TPO and modified bitumen
Low-slope roofs, such as garages, additions and many infill homes, drain too slowly for shingles and need a continuous membrane. EPDM is a rubber sheet that stays flexible in deep cold. TPO is a light-coloured single-ply membrane with heat-welded seams that reflects sunlight, which helps keep rooms below it cooler in summer. Modified bitumen is an asphalt-based sheet built up in layers and is tough against foot traffic. All three can handle our winters when installed well. Their weak points are seams, penetrations and drainage, because ponding water and ice put steady pressure on any gap. Detailing matters more than which membrane you pick.

Low-slope additions and garages
Use a proper membrane for any section with too little slope for shingles. EPDM, TPO and modified bitumen all work here when seams, edges and drainage are detailed well. Where a low-slope section meets a pitched roof, the transition flashing deserves extra attention.

Consider a synthetic shake or slate-look product before real cedar. It gives you the texture and shadow lines of a traditional roof while standing up better to our dry air, strong sun and hail. Check any community exterior guidelines first.
It’s not just the material
In Calgary, the way a roof is installed often matters as much as what it is made of. A top-rated product can still fail early if these details are missed.
- Ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys. This self-adhering membrane seals around nails and keeps water out when ice dams push meltwater back up the roof. Valleys carry the most water and need it too.
- Ventilation. Intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge keep the attic cold in winter, which limits ice dams, and release summer heat.
- Flashing. Chimneys, walls, skylights and vents are where most leaks start. Well-fitted flashing and a proper drip edge protect those weak points.
- Nailing for wind. Shingles need the right number of nails in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, and they need to seal. Nails placed too high or driven crooked are a common reason shingles lift in chinook gusts.
