The most effective way to prepare a Calgary home for ice dam season is a simple fall walk-through in September and October: look for warm air escaping into the attic, check the roof edge and valleys from the ground, and book any roof repairs before the snow settles in. Ice dams are built by heat and weather, so the work you do while the roof is dry and visible matters more than anything you can do once it is buried.

Why fall is the time to prevent ice dams in Calgary
Fall is the only window when you can see the roof, reach the attic comfortably and still get roof work done before winter. Snow can arrive as early as the third week of September and usually settles by late October or early November. After that, problems stay hidden until water shows up on a ceiling.
In the attic
The attic tells you whether house heat is reaching the underside of the roof, which is the root of most ice dams. Go up only if there is a proper hatch, a stable ladder and joists you can safely stand on. Wear a mask around insulation and never step between the joists. If access is awkward, skip this section and have a professional look.
- Stained or darkened sheathing. Brown rings or dark patches on the underside of the roof deck, especially near the lower edge, point to past moisture.
- Frost marks or rusty nail tips. Water spots on the wood and rust on nails poking through the deck mean warm, moist air has been reaching the roof.
- Compressed or missing insulation near the eaves. Insulation above the outside walls is often thin or pushed aside, letting heat escape right where ice forms.
- Blocked intake paths at the eaves. Cold outside air should enter through intake vents at the eaves and travel up under the deck. If insulation is stuffed against the underside of the roof at the edge, that airflow is choked off.
- Fans venting into the attic. Follow the ducts from bathroom and kitchen fans. They should run all the way outside, not end in the insulation or next to a roof vent, where they dump warm, humid air into the attic.
- A leaky attic hatch. Check the weatherstripping around the hatch or pull-down stairs. Gaps, flattened foam or light from the hallway below are easy places for heat to escape.
Take photos of what you find. Air sealing and insulation are specialist work, so if the attic shows clear heat loss, talk to an insulation or energy specialist. Ventilation and damaged sheathing are for a roofer to assess.
Around the house
Walking through the rooms just under the roof edge helps you find the heat sources that feed ice dams. The goal is to connect what happens inside with where ice forms outside.
- Pot lights in top-floor ceilings. Older recessed lights under the attic can leak a lot of heat, especially near outside walls.
- Warm ceilings below the roof edge. Storey-and-a-half homes, bonus rooms over garages and sloped upper ceilings put living space directly under the roof.
- Heat sources near the eaves. Flues, dryer vents and exhaust outlets close to the roof edge can melt snow in one spot and start a dam.
- Old ceiling or wall stains. Check closet ceilings and the tops of upper exterior walls. A faded stain shows where water already got in.
- Where last winter’s icicles formed. Mark the stretches of roof edge that grew the biggest icicles on a rough sketch of the house. Check those first and watch them this winter.
On the roof, from the ground
You can check most of the roof edge without leaving the yard, and you should. Frosty mornings and wet leaves make fall a bad time to climb. Binoculars and a clear day show plenty.
- Lifted or curled shingles near the eaves. Ice pushes water under shingles that no longer lie flat.
- Damaged drip edge. The metal strip along the roof edge should sit straight and tight. Bends or loose sections often date from last winter’s ice.
- Valley condition. Valleys carry meltwater from two slopes. Look for worn shingles, exposed metal or debris.
- Roof vents clear. Roof and ridge vents should be intact and free of debris, nests or hail damage.
- Flashing around chimneys and walls. Look for lifted or rusted metal and missing sealant.
- Satellite and solar mounts. Brackets bolted through the roof can loosen and leak. Note any mount that looks loose.

Roof work to book before snow
The fall checklist often turns up roof work that is far easier to handle before winter than after. Shingle sealant needs roughly 5°C to bond properly, so repairs done in mild fall weather hold better than those squeezed into a cold snap. Aim to book by mid-September to leave room for scheduling and weather.
Options worth discussing with a roofer include:
- Repairs to flashing, valleys and the eaves. Replacing lifted shingles, resealing or replacing flashing, straightening or replacing drip edge and fixing worn valleys close the gaps that ice dam water looks for.
- Replacing a worn roof with ice-and-water shield. Asphalt roofs in Calgary typically last about 15 to 20 years. If yours is near that age and already shows wear at the edges, a replacement lets you add self-adhering ice-and-water shield along the eaves and in the valleys, which is a basic part of a proper roof in a freeze-thaw climate.
- Ventilation corrections. Balanced intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge help keep the roof deck cold. If the attic showed blocked intake paths or frost marks, ask how the ventilation could be improved.
Plan for winter
A little planning now means you will know what to do when snow and ice arrive. Snow on the roof is normal. It starts to matter when a thick layer sits above a warm part of the roof, when a chinook is forecast, or when drifts pile into valleys.
- Roof rakes, with limits. Used from the ground, a roof rake can pull snow off single-storey eaves. Stand on level footing, stay clear of power lines and leave a thin layer so you do not scrape the shingles. Never use one from a ladder or on a two-storey roof.
- Watch the problem spots. Check the areas on your sketch after big snowfalls and during chinooks. Growing icicles are an early warning.

Heat cables: pros and cons
Heat cables can help on a specific trouble spot, but they are not a cure. These zig-zag electric cables along the roof edge keep a channel open so meltwater can drain.
- Pro: they keep water moving on a stretch of roof edge that ices up every year.
- Pro: they help where heat loss is hard to fix, as in some older storey-and-a-half homes.
- Con: they do nothing about the warm air that causes ice dams, and ice can still build above them.
- Con: they use electricity all winter, and poor installation can damage shingles. Wiring belongs with a qualified electrician.

What not to do
- Do not climb onto the roof to inspect it; use binoculars from the ground.
- Do not chip, hammer or pry at ice on the roof.
- Do not use salt pucks, open flames, heat guns or pressure washers on ice.
- Do not pack insulation tight against the underside of the roof at the eaves.
- Do not leave a known roof edge or valley problem until spring.
- Do not assume heat cables have solved the problem.
